Organisation In Plants 1.4 Flashcards
(36 cards)
What is the Epidermis?
Transparent layer of cells covering the surface of the leaf.
What is Evaporation?
When a liquid turns into a gas.
What are the Guard Cells?
Cells surrounding the stomata which control their opening and closing.
What is Humidity?
Level of water vapour in the atmosphere.
What is the Meristem Tissue?
Plant tissues containing undifferentiated stem cells.
What is the Palisade Mesophyll?
A tissue found in plant leaves that is specialised to carry out photosynthesis.
What is the Phloem?
A transport tissue found in plants which is specialised to transport sugars from source (leaves) to sink (roots).
What is the Potometer?
Device used to measure the rate of transpiration.
What is the Spongy Mesophyll?
A tissue found in plant leaves that is specialised for gas exchange.
What is the Stomata?
Holes in the underside of the leaf which allow gases and water vapour to diffuse into and out of the leaf.
What is translocation?
The movement of dissolved sugar molecules through the phloem tissue.
What is the Vascular Bundle?
Contain xylem and phloem tubes to transport water and dissolved substances around the plant.
What is the Waxy Cuticle?
Layer of waxy substance secreted by the epidermal cells to prevent water loss.
What is the Xylem?
A transport tissue in plants which is specialised to transport water and dissolved minerals from the roots of the plant to the leaves.
What is the function on the cell wall?
Strengthened by cellulose
Supports the cell
What is the nucleus?
Contains the genetic material that controls the activity of the cells
What is the mitochondria?
Where most reactions for aerobic respiration take place. Respiration transfers energy that the cell needs to work.
What is the permanent vacuole?
Contains cell sap, a weak solution of sugar and salts.
Provides support.
What is the cell membrane?
Holds the cell together and controls what goes in and out.
What is the cytoplasm?
Gel-like substance where most of the chemical reactions take place.
Contains enzymes that control these chemical reactions.
What is ribosomes?
Where proteins are made in the cell.
What is chloroplast?
Where photosynthesis occurs, which makes a green substance called chlorophyll, which absorbs the light needed for photosynthesis.
In a leaf there are different tissues. What are they?
Epidermal
Palisade
Spongy Mesophyll
Xylem
Phloem
Why do plants need a transport system?
Plants need to transport the sugars made In the leaves by photosynthesis and water and minerals ions taken in from the soil to the rest of the plant.
