Arranging and structuring work to accomplish the organisation’s goals
What are the elements of organisational design?
Work specialisation, departmentalisation, chain of command, span of control, centralisation/decentralisation and formalisation
What is work specialisation?
Dividing work activities into specific job tasks to make efficient use of diversified skills employees have
What is departmentalisation?
Basis by which jobs are grouped together, such as function, product, geography, process and customer.
What is span of control?
The number of subordinates managers can direct effectively and efficiently.
What is centralisation?
Decisions are made at upper level and communicated down, stable environment
What is decentralisation?
When lower level employees provide input and make decisions, complex environment
What is formalisation?
The degree to which jobs in a business and standardised and the extent employees are guided by rules and behaviours
What is the difference between a mechanistic and organic organisation?
A mechanistic organisation is rigid, whereas an organic organisation is highly adaptive and flexible
