Orginasation In Animals (Revamped) Flashcards
(35 cards)
What are the five levels of organisation in living organisms?
Cells → Tissues → Organs → Organ Systems → Organisms
What are cells?
Basic building blocks of all living organisms.
What are tissues?
Groups of cells with similar structure and function.
What are organs?
Groups of tissues working together to perform a specific function.
What are organ systems?
Groups of organs working together.
What are organisms?
Organ systems working together.
What is the function of the mouth in digestion?
Where food is chewed.
What is the role of the salivary glands?
Make saliva containing the enzyme amylase.
What does the oesophagus do?
Carries food to the stomach.
What is the function of the stomach?
Churns food and releases protease to digest proteins and hydrochloric acid to kill bacteria.
What is the role of the liver?
Makes bile.
What does bile do?
Neutralises stomach acid and emulsifies fat.
Where is bile stored?
Gall bladder.
What happens in the small intestine?
Digested food is absorbed into the blood.
What happens in the large intestine?
Water and minerals are absorbed into the blood.
What is the function of the rectum and anus?
Stores faeces and expels them.
What are the steps of breathing in air?
- Mouth/Nose → 2. Trachea → 3. Bronchi → 4. Bronchioles → 5. Alveoli.
Where does gas exchange occur in the lungs?
At the alveoli, oxygen diffuses into the blood.
What are the main components of blood?
Red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, plasma.
Function of red blood cells?
Bind to oxygen and transport it.
Function of white blood cells?
Defend the body against pathogens.
Function of platelets?
Form blood clots.
Function of plasma?
Transport substances and blood cells.
Function of arteries?
Carry blood away from the heart under high pressure.
