Origins and types of Clay Flashcards
(21 cards)
What is the earths crust made out of?
Feldspar
What are the 6 characteristics of secondary clay?
color varies, has impurities, small in size, plasticity varies, firing temp varies, and opaque
How does residual clay become a secondary clay?
natural forces weathering and transporting the clay, it has picked up impurities that changed the clay to secondary
What are the 3 clay’s used by potters?
Earthenware, stoneware, and porcelain
What are some characteristics of Earthenware?
Low firing temp, fragile, porous, varies in color and plasticity
What are some characteristics of Stoneware?
medium firing temp, not fragile, non-porous, vitrified when fired to maturity, varies in color and plasticity
What are some characteristics of Porcelain?
High firing temp, white, hard not fragile, translucent, non-plastic, no impurities
Whats does Transparent mean?
see through
Whats does Translucent mean?
can not see through, light pass through
Whats does opaque mean?
light can not pass through
Whats does plasticity mean?
malleable
Whats does igneous mean?
produced by the action of fire
Whats does porous mean?
full of holes (water can go through)
Whats does residual mean?
leftover
Whats does vitrify mean?
become glass-like
What happened in 20,000 BC?
clay sculptures were made for story telling
What happened in 9,000 BC?
Colored slip was introduced in Japan
What happened in 6,000 BC?
In the middle East controlled firing was developed
What happened in 4,500 BC?
in Mesopotamia using oxidation/reduction to affect color
What happened in 4,000 BC?
Writing on clay tablets
What happened in 2,500 BC?
First glaze found in Egypt
