Techniques of Glazing Flashcards
(28 cards)
What are the 3 main ingredients in glaze?
Silica, Flux, Alumina
Silica
Is similar to finely ground glass. It has a high melting point
Flux
Lowers melting point of silica., Increases fusibility, various material can act as a flux
Alumina
Gives glaze stability and adhesion
List 4 methods of applying a glaze
Dipping, Brushing, Pouring, Spraying
Describe Dipping
Immersing piece directly into glaze. (Window dipping: double dip only)
Describe Brushing
Best technique for hand built work, nice for multiple areas of different colors, apply 3 heavy coats of glaze
Describe Pouring
Best for large bowls, platters, and plates, also good for glazing the inside of your work
Describe Spraying
turn on fan, prime with water, spray glaze, flush clean with water. Don’t touch glaze after spraying
What color is Cobalt Carbonate?
Blue
What color is Iron
silver/grey
What color is Manganese?
Pinkish/red/purple
What color is Tin Oxide?
Red
What color is Chrome Carbonate?
Green
What are the two last things you do before you put your project on the ready shelf?
wipe all glaze off the bottom, apply one coat to the last 1/4 inch from the bottom
Why do we wax our pots and how do you do it properly?
wax creates a barrier so glaze won’t stick on it, wax bottom and 1/4 inch up
Identify the 8 “special techniques?
Underglaze, Banding,Sponge Patterning, Masque, Wax resist design, Iron Oxide wash, Scratch technique, Lusters
Describe Underglaze
doesn’t vitrify on its own, must be applied under or over a glaze
Describe Banding
Painting bands or rings of glaze as the circular piece spins on the wheel
Describe Sponge Patterning
Using a sponge to make representational or non-representational designs that you dab all over the piece with glaze
Describe Masque
another sponge technique
Describe wax resist design
Applying wax design over glazed areas
Describe Iron Oxide Wash
painting iron wash over the texture of a piece than wiping off as much as you want with a sponge
Describe Scratch Technique
scratch a design through the glaze then go over with a contrasting glaze color
