How would a structuralist historian interpret the Cold War?

Structuralists believe individuals only have a limited impact within the systems in which they operate. Eg: Svetlana Aliluyeva, Stalin's daughter said "Stalin was impotent in the face of the frighful system which had grown up around him"

What was the Hallestein doctrine?

It meant that West Germany did not recognise East Germany as a state, and would sanction any states which maintained diplomatic ties with East Germany (except from the USSR).
It succeeded in isolating the GDR for a long time.

*It ended in 1971 following the Four Power Agreement, with Wily Brandt pursuing Ostpolitik.
