Q

What should a patient be educated on about their orthotic?

A
  • Wear time/tolerance - 30 minutes then gradually increase
  • Signs of improper fit
  • Skin inspection
  • Sock or other interface use
  • Care of device (don’t leave in hot car)
  • Expected changed in effectiveness and efficiency during functional mobility

Q

3 reasons

An orthotic is most comfortable and effectives when:

A
  1. Forces distributed over large surface areas to minimize pressure on skin and soft tissue
  2. Forces are applied in a way that a large moment arm reduces the amount of force needed to control the joint
  3. The sum of primary and counter-forces of each control system equals zero
