Q

What does partially permeable mean?

A

It means that the cell wall lets smaller particles throught but keeps the larger ones out

Q

Define Hypertonic Solution

A

In a state of high tension/concentration (In animal cells the cell shrivels up and the net movement of the cell is outside. In a plant cell the vacuole shrivels up and the cell itself looks out of place)

Q

Define Isotonic Solution

A

The water potential (water movement in and out the cell) between the cell and outside is equal so in this case its normal and the total water net movement is 0 (In animal cells the cells are in a normal state and its the same in the case of plant cells)

Q

Define Hypotonic solution

A

the water potential is very low within the cell and there is a huge rush of water into the cell (in animal cell the cell will die as it has no cell wall to protect it unlike the plant cell.So the animal cell will birst spewing out its organelles in the process)
