Q

Simply describe what you did

A
  • poured a 0.0-0.5 concentrated water of sugar into test tubes and did this twice to get a reliable result.
  • take off the skin of the potatoes and chop them to the same size, also weigh them to record the percentage change.
  • put the potatoes in the solution for about 25-30 minutes and then take them out and dry them.
  • weigh the potatoes again and find out the percentage change from the original weight and also the mean average change from both of the solutions

Q

What is the conclusion in this practical?

A

At low concentration solution water molecules left the dilute solution to concentrated solution through a semi-permeable membrane to a high concentration in a potato through osmosis, which happened in distilled water as there was more concentration in the potato.

At high concentration solution water molecules left the potato entering the water through a semi-permeable membrane due to the potato being more dilute than the concentrated water. This happened in the 0.5 concentrated solution as there was more concentration than the potato.

Q

Evaluation of this practical

A

If I repeated I would have:
Repeated it three times as it would have proved any anomalies and give a more exact result.
Make sure all the surface area is the same and keep the potatoes the same length.
