Pediculosis capitis
What is headlice?
A common condition in children caused by parasitic insect pediculus capitis living on the hair of the scalp
What are nits
The empty egg shells of the parasite
Spread of headlice
Direct head to head contact
Presentation of headlice
Itching + scratching 2-3 weeks after infection
Diagnosis of headlice
Fine toothed combing of wet or dry hair
Management of headlice
- indicated if living lice are found
- malathion
- wet combing
- dimeticone + repeat after 7 days
- household contacts only need to be treated if infected
- school exclusion not advised
What is infantile colic?
When a healthy baby cries for a long time without any obvious reason
When is infantile colic most common?
First 6 weeks of life
Diagnostic criteria of infantile colic
- <5 months when symptoms start
- unshakeable periods of restlessness/crying (3 hours per day, 3 days a week for 3 weeks)
- no evidence of faltering growth, fever or illness
- +/- crying in evenings, clenched fist, drawing knees up to abdomen
Complications of infantile colic
- Stress to carer and sleep deprivation
- fatigue
- anxiety + depression
- premature cessation of breastfeeding
Management of infantile colic
- hold baby when crying, gentle movements
- warm baths
- white noise
- information, reassurance + wellbeing for carer
- encourage breastfeeding
Causes of nappy rash
- irritant dermatitis (most common)
- candida dermatitis
- seborrhoeic dermatitis
- psoriasis
- atopic eczema
Compare irritant dermatitis + candida dermatitis
- creases spared in irritant dermatitis
- creases affected in candida dermatitis + satellite lesions
General management of nappy rash
- disposable nappies > towel nappies
- exposure to air when possible
- apply carrier cream e.g. zinc + castor oil
- mild steroid cream e.g. 1% hydrocortisone
- topical imidazole if candida suspected
