Outbreaks Flashcards
(11 cards)
What is health protection?
The protection of individuals + groups through expert advice + effective collaboration to prevent and mitigate the impact of infectious disease, environmental, chemical + radiological threats
Three domains of health protection
- communicable disease control
- environmental public health
- emergency preparedness, resilience + response
What model is used in health crisis?
Source-pathway-receptor model
Definition of outbreak
- 2 or more cases of an infectious disease that are linked by time, place or person
- an increase in cases of infectious disease above normal background rate of disease
- any case of infectious disease which does not normally occur in that setting
Types of outbreak
Point source
Propagated
Extended (continuous)
What is the R (reproductive number) in out break
A measure of transmission potential
The expected number of secondary cases that the primary case will cause
How soon do you need to notify public health England to notifiable diseases?
3 days
What are notifiable diseases?
- acute meningitis
- acute infectious hepatitis
- botulsim
- cholera
- typhoid fever
- haemolytic uraemic syndrome
- legionnaires disease
- MMR
- small box
- TB
- whooping cough
- tetanus
What are the types of prevention?
- primary: well population to prevent onset of disease by reducing exposure to risk factors
- secondary prevention: screening at risk people, control of risk factors + early intervention
- tertiary prevention: in patients with helath problem - preventing complications + improving QoL
4 main approaches of primary prevention
- immunisations
- prevention of contact with environmental exposure
- taking appropriate precautions
- reducing risk factors from helath related behaviours
Domains of public helath
