Outcome 2 Flashcards
(4 cards)
Captive vs Wild (Feeding)
Natural food source may not be available
Natural food may be difficult or expensive to source.
Captive animals are likely to be less active than in the wild.
Live Feeding
In the UK, live vertebrates may be fed in exceptional circumstances, on the advice of a vet. Other than this, it is illegal to feed them to animals.
Animals which have previously been fed live prey are unlikely to eat dead prey.
Public Perception (Live Feeding)
If people are unhappy, can lead to complaints and financial problems.
However, it is a good opportunity for education and popular with zoo visitors
Entire carcasses are better then pre-prepared meat ,
(“no faces or tails”)
Palatability
Animals are not likely to always choose food that is the most suitable. They prefer rich, high energy food - Lipids, which are highly palatable foods. Can be affected by: - Odour - Appearance - Texture - Taste - Temperature
