Overview: Remote Sensing Flashcards
(9 cards)
1
Q
What is Remote Sensing
A
- Science of obtaining information about objects or areas from a distance
- Aircraft or Satellites
2
Q
Passive Sensors
A
Measure energy that is naturally available
3
Q
Active Sensors
A
Operate with their own source of emission
4
Q
Identify the Type of land cover present
A
- Spectral signature: combination of wavelengths of energy reflected from that particular land cover
- values allocated to a particular colour –> false colour/ true colour imaging
5
Q
Identify the Type of land cover change
A
- comparing recent images of the same location e.g. deforestation, urban sprawl ect.
6
Q
Identify the Extent of Land cover change
A
- each pixel of data has a know area
- extent of lcc can be calculated in km2 or ha eg. landsat thematic mapper,
7
Q
Identify the Rate of land cover change
A
- repeat images of same location compared by computer to identify changes in spectral signature over time
- Rate can be measured (forest loss/year)
- eg. landsat 8 & 9 take photo of every part of earths surface every 8 days
8
Q
Identify the Location of Land cover change
A
- image geo-referenced (exact long and lat recorded) –> location accurately identified
- examined at a range of scales - local, regional, global
9
Q
What is an example of remote sensing
A
Landsat (1972)
- Nasa & US geological survey
- role: monitoring, understanding, and managing land resources needed to sustain human life
- to be continued
