Oxygen Flashcards
(9 cards)
Why should oxygen be regarded as a drug?
Because it must be prescribed and dosed appropriately; inappropriate oxygen therapy can have serious or fatal consequences.
What is the general oxygen saturation target for acutely ill patients with normal or low PaCO₂?
94–98%.
What is the target oxygen saturation for patients at risk of hypercapnic respiratory failure (e.g. COPD)?
88–92%.
In which conditions is high-concentration oxygen therapy generally safe?
Pneumonia, pulmonary embolism, pulmonary fibrosis, shock, trauma, sepsis, anaphylaxis.
What device should be used for COPD patients with a history of hypercapnic respiratory failure?
A 24% or 28% Venturi mask.
What is a disadvantage of nasal cannulae in long-term use?
They can cause nasal dryness and dermatitis.
Oxygen from a cylinder should always be humidified to try to prevent this.
What are the key psychosocial adverse effects of home oxygen therapy?
Psychological dependence, social restriction, stigma.
Name some drug-related adverse effects of oxygen therapy.
Oxygen toxicity, lung atelectasis, airway drying, fire hazard.
Should long-term oxygen therapy be given to patients who continue to smoke?
No, it is not recommended.
