11
Q

Describe the method of the C5 required practical - exothermic and endothermic reactions

A
  1. Gather equipment
  2. Place the polystyrene cup inside the beaker. (This prevents the cup from falling over.)
  3. Using a measuring cylinder, measure 30cm^3 of acid. Pour this into the polystyrene cup
  4. Record the temperature of the acid using a thermometer
  5. Using a top pan balance, measure the appropriate amount of solid.
  6. Add the solid to the acid and record the temperature of the acid each minute for 10 minutes.

A

Fractional distillation

17
Q

Who discovered that the plum pudding model was wrong?

A

Ernest Rutherford

18
Q

Who first devised an experiment that proved the existence of the neutron?

A

James Chadwick

19
Q

What is the electronic structure of sodium?

20
Q

Why did Mendeleev leave gaps in his table of elements?

A

Some elements had not been discovered yet

21
Q

How are the group number and the number of electrons in the outer shell of an element related?

A

The group number is the number of electrons in the outer shell

22
Q

What kind of ions do metals form?

A

Positive ions - cations.

23
Q

State 3 trends as you go down Group 1

A
  1. reactivity increases
  2. atomic size increases
  3. melting and boiling points decrease
24
Q

How do the boiling points of halogens change as you go down the group from fluorine to astatine?

A

As you go down the halogens from fluorine to astatine, the boiling points increase

25
What is the charge of the ions that halogens form when they react with metals?
Halogens form negative ions - anions
26
What is the trend in the boiling point as you go down group 0?
Boiling point increases
