P2 Flashcards
(11 cards)
What is the difference between a finite and renewable resource?
A finite resource will take a long time to replenish whereas a renewable resource can be replaced within a short time scale.
Give an example of a finite resource
Crude oil
Give an example of a renewable resource
Wood
Wind
Sunlight
Define sustainable
Meeting our needs without preventing future generations from meeting theirs
Explain how to check if water is pure (RP - 6MARK)
- Put a small amount of the water sample on a piece of universal indicator paper
- If pH is not 7 (green), the water is not pure - has dissolved acids or alkali
- If pH is 7, it does not mean it’s pure as it may have dissolved solids.
- Use a balance to weigh an empty evaporating basin and record mass
- Fill the evaporating basin with the water sample and place it on a tripod with a gauze and bunsen burner underneath
- Heat water until it has all evaporated and then allow the evaporating basin to cool and weigh it again
- If the water sample contained any dissolved solids, the mass of the empty evaporating basin will have increased as the dissolved solids would have formed crystals on the surface of the evaporating basin. This means it is NOT pure.
What is potable water?
Water that is safe to drink. It has little amount of dissolved salts and do not have high levels of microbes.
What is the difference of pure water and potable water?
Pure water has no dissolved substances whereas as potable water has dissolved substances in small amounts
How can aquifers be polluted?
Fertilisation from farms
What is the easiest way to produce potable water?
Use ground water from aquifers - then desalination.
Suggest one way in which chemistry is improving sustainability
Development of biodegradable plastics reduce polution
