Define density
Density is the mass per units volume of a substance, it is measured in kilograms per cubic meter
Which state of matter is most dense and why?
Solid because particles are closest together
If an object floats on water, what does it tell you about the density of the object?
It has a lower density
How do you find the density of a regular object?
-Measure mass with scale
-measure length* width* height using a ruler
-Volume= length* width* height
-repeat three times
How do you find the density of a liquid?
-Measure volume using measuring cylinder
-Measure mass of container using balance
-Pour liquid into container and measure both using balance
-Subtract mass of container from total mass
-Use equation density= mass/volume
Describe how to find the density of an irregular object
-Measure mass of object with scale
-Pour water into a displacement can so it is level with the spout
-Place the object and they can gently to avoid splash
-Hold me measuring cylinder up to spout to catch overflow
-Record volume of water that overflowed
-Use equation density= mass/volume and repeat three times
What is the arrangement, movement and intermolecular force of a solid?
Arrangement – regular arrangement, tightly packed
Movement – vibrates about a fixed point
Intermolecular forces – strong
What is the arrangement, movement and intermolecular force of a liquid?
Arrangement – irregular arrangement, particles are still touching
Movement – able to move over each other (translational)
Intermolecular forces – medium
What is the arrangement, movement and intermolecular force of a gas?
Arrangement – random arrangement, spread out
Movement – random speeds and directions
Intermolecular forces – weak
Definition of internal energy
The sum of the kinetic energy and the potential energy for all the particles in the material
Define specific latent heat
The amount of energy required to change the state of 1 kg of a material without increasing the temperature of the material
Define specific latent heat of fusion
Change of state from solid to liquid
Define specific latent heat of vaporisation
Change of state from liquid to vapour
What happens to the pressure of gas particles in a close container?
Increases speed, more frequent collisions, force per collision increases, force per unit area increases
Define Boyles law
The pressure of a gas is inversely proportional to the volume of the gas at a constant temperature
