P3.1: Static And Charge Flashcards
(13 cards)
What is static electricity?
a buildup of electric charge, either positive or negative, on the surface of an object
What happens when 2 materials are rubbed together?
Electrons are transferred from one to another
What will happen to electrons when 2 conductors are rubbed together?
Electrons are transferred from one to another so they stay neutral
What will happen to electrons when 2 insulators are rubbed together?
Electrons cannot flow - a positive static charge is left on the object that lost electrons, negative static charge on the object that gained electrons
What can happen to insulators if enough charge builds up?
Suddenly move
Sparks
Shocks
What do electrically charged objects do on one another?
Extert a force
What is electrostatic attraction?
The force between 2 charged objects (if they attract)
What is electrostatic repel?
The force between 2 charged objects (if they repel)
How can you test for a charge in pieces of paper and a charged rod?
This happens because the charged rod induces a charge in the paper — if the rod is positively charged, it attracts the electrons in the paper towards it, and if it’s negatively charged it repels the electrons. This gives the surface of the paper
near the rod an opposite charge to the rod, so the rod and the paper are attracted together.
How can you test whether an object is charged by holding a chrged rod near a stream of water?
The rod will induce a charge in the water, so the stream will be attracted to the rod and bend towards it.
What fields do charged objects have?
Electric fields
The closer together the electric field lines are…
Te stronger the field and the stronger the force a charged object in the field experiences
What is an isolated sphere?
Its field lines dont interact with anything
