What happens when you bring two magnets together?
they exert a force on each other

they repel each other (move away)
What is an induced magnet?
an object that becomes a magnet when it is placed in a magnetic field (metal)
What is a permanent magnet?
produces its own magnetic field (magnet)
what are the four types of magnetic materials?
Iron, steel, cobalt and nickel
what is a magnetic field?
The region around a magnet where a force acts on another magnet or magnetic material
What does the strength of the magnetic field depend on?
depends on the distance from the magnetic
What direction does the compass on a magnetic field show?
Always runs in the direction from North Pole to South Pole
How do we know that the earths core is magnetic?
If we hold a compass away from any magnets, then the needle always points in the north south direction, which tells us that the Earth has its own magnetic field
What happens when a current flows through a conducting wire?
A magnetic field is produced around the wire
What’s one way to increase the strength of a magnetic field in a circuit?
To coil the wire (looks like a helix) This is called a Solenoid
what are the three ways that we can increase the strength of the magnetic field produced by a solenoid?
increase the size of the current
increase the number of turns of the coil
place a piece of iron inside the solenoid (iron core)
