What is lactic acid?
Lactic acid is toxic and can cause fatigue and painful cramps in your muscles.
It is produced during anaerobic respiration.
Where does anaerobic respiration take place?
In the cytoplasm of cells.
This process occurs without oxygen.
What is oxygen debt?
The extra oxygen required after anaerobic respiration to break down lactic acid.
This is why you often breathe heavily after exercise.
What is fermentation?
A type of anaerobic respiration in which glucose is converted into ethanol, carbon dioxide, and energy.
It is commonly used in food and beverage production.
What type of microorganism is yeast?
Yeast is a fungus.
It plays a significant role in fermentation.
What is biotechnology?
The use of biological processes or organisms to create useful products.
Examples include the production of bread and alcoholic drinks.
What ingredients are mixed together to make dough rise?
Flour, water, and yeast.
The yeast respires anaerobically, changing sugars into ethanol and carbon dioxide.
What is brewing?
The process of making wine and beer by fermenting sugars in grapes or malted barley.
Yeast is used in this fermentation process.
