Pain Definitions Flashcards
(11 cards)
Define Nociception?
Subset to the sensory nervous system related to pain and temperature
Define Allodynia.
Pain due to stimulus that does not normally provoke pain
Define Hyperalgesia?
Increased pain from a stimulus that normally provokes pain
Define Neuropathic Pain?
Pain caused by a lesion or disease of the somatosensory nervous system
Define Nociplastic Pain?
Pain that comes from altered nociception despite no tissue damage causing activation of peripheral nociceptors or evidence for disease of the somatosensory causing pain
Define sensitisation in the context of pain.
Increased responsiveness of nociceptive neurons to their normal input, and/or recruitment of a response to normally subthreshold inputs
Define Central Sensitisation?
Increased responsiveness of nociceptive neurons in the CNS
Define Peripheral Sensitisation?
Increased responsiveness of nociceptive neurons in the PNS. Acute soft tissue injury
What does multidisciplinary treatment involve?
Treatment from different disciplines
Multidisciplinary approaches can enhance recovery in pain management.
Define Acute pain?
Short term protective response to injury or tissue damage which is resolved by the body healing
Acute pain typically lasts less than three months.
Define chronic pain.
Lasts for more than 3 months and is influenced by neurological, psychological or environmental factors
