Explain the Biomedical Model of Pain
Stimulus -> Brain = Pain
If you stub ur toe a signal will be sent to the brain saying that there is pain
Problems with the biomedical model of pain
Dualism - the mind is separate from the body
Assumption that pain is a sensation
Does a diagnosed injury mean that there will be pain
no. many people have herniated discs but don’t feel pain
Gate control theory
Brain chooses to let stimulus in to the brain or deny it entry
e.g Soldiers who are shot in the chest sometimes don’t experience pain
What two theories when combined explain the phantom limb theory
gate control theory and biopsychosocial theory
What is the leading explanation resulting in amputees feeling a phantom lim
altered peripheral nerve activity in the region of the stump
What is the neuromatrix model
The neuromatrix which includes physical and psychological experiences create pain
What is the fear avoidance model
When you feel really scared so you don’t do it, so then you get more scared because you haven’t done it which makes you avoid it more……..
What is the mature organism model?
Tissue messages coming in (hammer hitting a thumb), as well as environmental messages (there is blood everywhere, it was a murderer who hit my thumb with the hammer)
The body uses past experience to decide what to do
The brain then provides outputs (swearing, pulling thumb away)
