What is hospice care?
End of life care, managing symptoms.
What does palliative care involve?
When the treatment is no longer curative, it is just going to be managing symptoms.
E.g. COPD - only ever have symptom control - are patients palliative from the moment you get diagnosed.
What should be considered when communicating with patients about palliative care?
Need to be careful with how we word sentences to patients.
What is the average retention rate of information discussed in difficult conversations?
An average person remembers a very small percentage of what was just discussed (50%) - 50% remembered incorrectly.
What should healthcare providers recognize when dealing with difficult conversations?
Need to recognise your own emotions and needs.
What does the term ‘terminal’ imply?
Feels more harsh and final.
What are some barriers to effective communication?
Language, time, pride, and embarrassment.
