Pancreas & Spleen Wk10 Flashcards
(21 cards)
What functions does the pancreas have?
- exocrine function: glandular cells secrete components of pancreatic juice
- endocrine functions –
insulin and glucagon
What are the pancreatic juices composed of?
enzymes, salts, sodium hydrocarbonate
What are the enzymes?
- pancreatic amylase
- trypsin and chymotrypsin
- pancreatic lipase
- ribonuclease
- deoxyribonuclease
Where is the pancreas located?
Epigastric (2)
Left hypochondrium (3)
Pancreas is a what structure?
retroperitoneal structure
The pancreas is attached to
transverse mesocolon anteriorly = peritoneal structure
* Uncinate process – SMA & SMV
Components of the pancreas is
Comprised of:
uncinate process, head, neck, body, tail
Pancreatic duct joins with common bile duct and __
empties pancreatic enzymes via the major duodenal papilla (sphinter of Odie) into descending duodenum
Superior mesenteric artery provides blood to
head and uncinate process
Celiac trunk - splenic artery gives blood to which section of pancreas?
part of the neck, body and tail will receive blood
Pancreas has 2 functions
exocrine and endocrine
Exocrine function has
- Exocrine cells (acini)
- Pancreatic ducts
Prodn of digestive enzymes
under the control of ANS
Endocrine function has
Specialised cells = Islet of Langerhans
- Blood vessels
Prodn of hormones incl; glucagon, insulin, pancreatic polypeptide, somatostatin, ghrelin – secretion into blood vessels
What level can you find the pancreas?
The head of the pancreas lies in front of L2 vertebra, the body lies in front of L1 vertebra, and the tail lies at the level of T12 vertebra
Explain the function of the spleen
- lymphocyte proliferation (growth)
- immune surveillance and
response - Prenatal – hematopoetic
(blood forming) organ - Postnatal – identifying,
removing, and destroying
expended RBCs - Serves as blood reservoir
– stores RBCs and
platelets
Where is the spleen is located in (grids)?
Left hypochondriac (3)
Spleen relationships
Posterior to
stomach
* Inferior to
diaphragm
* Develops within
dorsal mesentry
What are the components of the spleen?
Diaphragmatic surface (lat)
gastric/colic surfaces
Colic surface – Splenic hilum
* Hilum: entry pt of vessels (splenic a and sits with
tail of pancreas
What does spleen connect to via ligaments?
Develops within dorsal mesentry
* Connected to stomach by gastrosplenic ligament
* Connected to kidney by splenorenal ligament
* Both ligs are portions greater omentum
When we transition from transverse to descending on the left,
it is the left colic flexure which is also referred to as splenic nerve
What artery supplies blood to spleen?
Splenic artery which is apart of the celiac trunk
