Panels and testing Flashcards
(24 cards)
What are two benefits of using an internal panel?
Do not have to pay them and the confidentiality is kept within the company
What are two challenges of using an internal panel?
Other jobs may take precedence and they may have prior knowledge of products or projects
What are two benefits of using an external panel?
It is the assessors only job and there is high assessor motivation
What are two challenges of using an external panel?
Expensive and you need to have enough work to keep them occupied
Why is it important to conduct best practice?
So you have results with low variability and no biasing factors
What are some tools for screening panels?
pre-interview questionnaire, sensory impairment tests, sensory acuity tests and descriptive exercises
What are the three types of sensory test?
Discrimination (difference), descriptive (profiling) and Affective (preference) tests
What do discrimination tests, test for?
They can be used to test for a detectable difference in 2 or more samples, it can also be used to test for similarity
Which types of tests would you use a trained panel for?
Discrimination and descriptive tests as they are both objective tests
What is the difference in directional and non-directional discrimination tests?
non-directional is if a sensory difference is perceived and directional is for a specific difference, eg. sweetness
Name 3 examples of non-directional tests
Triangle test, tetrad - unspecifed and 2 out of 5
Name 3 examples of directional tests
Paired comparison, ranking and tetrad - specified
What is the main aim of descriptive tests?
To know the nature of the difference (qualitative) and the size of the difference (quantitative)
What are the 4 types of scales used in descriptive testing?
Category scales, linear scales, magnitude estimation and labelled magnitude scale
What are the 2 types of linear and category scales?
polar - going from strong to weak and bipolar - going from one opposing attribute to another, ie. dry to wet
Name 4 descriptive analysis techniques
Flavour profile, texture profile, quantitative descriptive analysis and free choice profiling
How does principal component analysis work?
This will chart sample responses along a 4-way axis then it will lay the characteristics associated with these products over the top
Name 3 temporal and dynamic methods for descriptive analysis
temporal dominance sensation, temporal order of sensation and temporal check all that apply
How would you score a consumer test for acceptance?
Using a 9-poiny hedonic scale for degree of liking
Apart from acceptance what else can consumer testes, test for ?
Preference
What is a population?
All individuals that define a group of interest, eg. all those who drink
What is a sample?
A representative group that is taken to represent a populations, eg. a representative group of drinks
What is the null hypothesis?
Concluding that there is no significant difference
What is the alturnative hypothesis?
Concluding that there is a significant difference
