3
Q

State the properties of ionic compounds.

A

High melting & melting point.
Strong electrostatic forces of attraction.
Form giant ionic lattices.
They dissolve in water.
They can conduct electricity when molten or dissolved due to the ions being able to move.

6
Q

Give properties of metals.

A

Can conduct electricity - the electrons transfer the current.
Good conductor of heat.
Solid at room temperature.
The atoms can also SLIDE over each other, making metals malleable.

Q

Why are metals good conductors of electricity?

A

This is because their outer electrons are not attached to any particular atom. Instead they are able to move between atoms. They are called FREE delocalised ELECTRONS.
