Paper 1 - Circuits and Resistance Flashcards
(7 cards)
what equipment do you need when you investigate adding resistors in series
3 points
1) 4 resistors
2) battery
3) ammeter
how can you investigate adding resistors in series
6 points
1) first you need at least 4 identical resistors
2) then build a circuit using one of the resistors and make a note of the pd of the battery
3) measure the current through the circuit using the ammeter then calculate the resistance - R=V/I
4) add another resistor in series
5) measure the current through the circuit and use this and the pd of the battery to calculate the resistance of the circuit
5) repeat steps 4-5 until you’ve added all of your resistors
6) plot a graph of the number of resistors against the total resistance of the circuit
draw the circuit diagram for when you investigate adding resistors in series
pg 50
draw the graph for the resistance of the circuit against the number of resistors in series and describe it
3 points
1) pg 50
2) adding resistors in series increases the total resistance (it decreases the total current)
how can you investigate adding resistors in parallel
6 points
1) using the same equipment (so it’s a fair experiment) build the same initial circuit
2) measure the total current through the circuit and calculate the resistance using the pd from the battery - R=V/I
3) then add another resistor in parallel with the first
4) measure the total current through the circuit and use the pd to calculate the resistance again
5) repeat steps 3-4 until you’ve added all the resistors
6) plot a graph of the number of resistors in the circuit against the total resistance
draw the circuit diagram of the resistors in parallel
pg 50
draw the graph of number of resistors in parallel against total resistance and describe it
3 points
1) pg 50
2) adding resistors increases the current so the total resistance decreases
3) the more resistors you add the smaller the overall resistance
