What is Juxtaposition? What is its intended effect?
Placing contrasting ideas close to each other to highlight their differences
Effect: Allows the creator to convey a unique quality about a product by placing it with something that does not possess that quality.
What is Antithesis? What is its intended effect?
Two sentences of contrasting meanings in close proximity
Effect: Allows the writer to lend a greater insight into the subject and creates greater emphasis and clarity. It also highlights the stark difference between opposing ideas
What is the intended effect of Repetition?
Effect: Allows the speaker to put emphasis on importance ideas and make them more memorable for the reader
What is Parallelism? What is its intended effect?
Placing similarly structured related phrases, words or clauses together.
Effect: Makes the idea easier to process for the reader because they sense a pattern and know what to expect
What is Tricolon? What is its intended effect?
Three parallel clauses, phrases or words which come in quick succession without any interruption
Effect: The reader absorbs and retains information more efficiently when it is packaged in sets of three.
What is Hypophora? What is its intended effect?
Raising a question and then immediately answering it
Effect: It allows the reader to take the discussion in a new direction
It catches the reader’s attention as curiosity is simulated by hearing a question.
It suggests and answers questions that readers might not have thought of
What is the intended effect of Mood?
Affects the reader by creating varying emotions and providing a psychological feel for the narrative
What is Polysyndeton? What is its intended effect?
Using conjunctions or connecting words frequently in a sentence
Effect: It slows down the rhythm of the phrase which emphasises each individual item in the list and makes the idea more memorable.
What is Tone? What is its intended effect?
Attitude of a writer towards the subject or the audience
Effect: It affects how the reader perceives the writer’s intentions and can provide emphasis, intent and emotion to words.
