Paper 1 Topic 1 - Atomic Structure & The Periodic Table (The Periodic Table) Flashcards
(13 cards)
How did chemists classify elements before the discovery of sub-atomic particles?
By increasing atomic weight
Why did Dmitri Mendeleev leave gaps in his first published periodic table?
- To account for discoveries of new elements
- To predict the properties of undiscovered elements
What is a period?
A row in the periodic table. Elements in each period are linked by increasing atomic number.
(Period 2 elements have Ar 3-10)
What is a group?
A vertical column in the periodic table. Elements with similar chemical properties are placed in a group together.
What is meant by electronic structure?
The way that electrons are arranged in an atom
How many electrons can the first shell hold?
2
How many electrons can the second and third shell hold?
8
What does the number of shells tell you about an element?
What period it is located in
What does the number of electrons in the outermost shell tell you about an element?
What group it is in
What does the total number of electrons tell you about an element?
It’s atomic number
What will happen to a metal during a reaction (in terms of electron transfer)?
It will lose electron(s) and form a positively charged ion
State the properties of metals when solid.
- Good conductor of electricity
- Good conductor of heat
- Shiny
- High density
- Malleable and ductile
State the properties of a non-metal when solid.
- Poor conductor of electricity
- Poor conductor of heat
- Dull
- Low density
- Brittle
