Paper 1 Topic 1- Atomic Structure & The Periodic Table (Transition Metals) Flashcards
(7 cards)
Where are transition metals located on the periodic table?
Between groups 2 and 3
State the physical properties that transition metals share with other elements.
- They conduct electricity in solid and liquid states
- They are shiny when freshly cut
What properties do transition metals have that are different to group 1 metals?
- Higher melting points
- Higher densities
- Greater strength
- Greater hardness
State 2 transition metals that display typical properties.
- Chromium (Cr)
- Manganese (Mn)
- Iron (Fe)
- Cobalt (Co)
- Nickel (Ni)
- Copper (Cu)
Compared to group 1 metals, describe how transition metals react with oxygen.
Most transition metals react very slowly, or not at all, with oxygen at room temperature.
Select transition metals (such as copper) will react with oxygen when heated.
Do transition metals react with water?
Usually, no. Some will react slowly with cold water however this is not the norm.
What is a catalyst?
A substance that increases the rate of reaction by proving an alternative reaction pathway that has a lower activation energy.
