Assumptions to Psychodynamic approach?
unconscious forces in our mind determine our thoughts, feelings and behaviour
the mind can be split into conscious, pre-conscious, unconscious
future behaviour in adults is influenced by childhood experience
conscious?
what we are aware of
e.g. the tip of the iceberg
pre-conscious?
thoughts we may be aware of throught dreaming and parapraxes
parapraxes?
slips of tongue such as calling your teacher mum/dad
unconscious?
thoughts that are led by biological instincts and drives which then influence behaviour and personality
e.g. fears, traumas including repressed distrubing/threatening memories
personality?
Id - instinctive part fueled off unconscious desires/impulses (instant gratification)
Ego - rational part fueled off logical conscious thoughts to balance Id
Superego - moral values and determines if ego use will unacceptable means to balance Id

oedipus complex?
what? unconscious desire for opposite sex parent
how? makes them resent same sex parent and see as competitor as bigger/stronger
so? develop castration anxiety as believe girls have been castrated by competitor and in turn identify with competitor. this allows for super ego to develops as internalision of competitors morals and standards occurs

displacement - transferring feelings from their true source to submissive target
strengths?
(introduction) psychotherapy is the forerunner to many mordern day therapies such as counselling
can be used to explain wide range of behaviours and draws attention to influence of childhood on behaviour. so positive influence
weaknesses?
untestable concepts such as oedipus complex occurring at unconscious level. so lacks scientific rigour and may be seen as a pseudo science
determinism as no space for free will since freud believed there was no such thing as accident. so too extreme
