Paper1/2-SC4 Flashcards
(14 cards)
What is a base?
Any substance that reacts with an acid to from salt and water only.
What makes an acid stronger?
Dissociate more in water so there is the maximum amount of hydrogen ions.
When are ide and ate used?
- ide if it contains just two elements.
- ate if it contains three or more elements, one of which is oxygen.
How many elements are there in the periodic table?
118
How did Mendeleev sort the periodic table?
Increasing mass number however iodine and tellurium were switched due to a physical property. There were also no noble gases/group 8.
What is the only product of a hydrogen-oxygen fuel cell?
Water.
What is a neutralisation reaction?
Reaction between an acid and a base.
What does covalent bonding result in?
The formation of molecules.
What does the oxidation of metals result in?
Corrosion.
What is electrolysis?
Where electrical energy from direct current decomposes electrolytes.
Why did Mendeleev leave gaps in the periodic table?
He assumed that elements would continue to be discorvered.
Where are elements with similar properties?
In the same group.
What word describes the noble gases?
Inert.
What does extracting metals involve?
Reduction of ores.
