Park movement examples Flashcards
(9 cards)
What is a movement which displays the theme of power and control as well as the use of props and influences?
-The lighting is a general white wash and the males are in the background drumming the beat of the ‘popcorn’ like song with an object, for example the bully is using the ball and bounces it on the wall etc (resembles his character)
-The four females are CS and the jump on the spot in a pencil-like position, arms by their sides and an overly-exaggerated smile on their face. While they jump they perform canons such as being in a horizontal line close together and from the right to left side they tilt their heads towards one another which is performed on the almost popping beats in the music
-The jumping is in unison to show that the females are being controlled and manipulated by the males
-Relate this to tanz (dance) theatre - influence from Pina Basuch - multiple things happening on stage at once
Which movement example shows the use of technology (feature of ICDS), text and the theme of ownership?
-The developer is wearing a white building hat and a reflective vest while he is guiding the tourist around the area as he wants to develop the Park into something more economically valuable
-As he exclaims ‘Casino!’ a big casino sign flashes behind him with stripes and a big pink and yellow bold sign flashing
-There is the sounds of the slot machine in the background suggesting money and wealth that can be provided from the re-development
-there are also projections on the walls with bottle cabinets to perhaps represent a bar and enjoyment
-Overall theme of ownership as the park won’t belong to the citizens anymore
Which movement example shows the use of tap dance, physical theatre and the use of collaboration with her dancers?
-The siren in the background US sings a non lyric version of ‘Singing in the rain’ while the busker tap dances to it
-Wooden floors are placed in a pathway along CS and the busker runs across them with his head back and his right arm extended directly out in front of him moving towards SL and holds his umbrella with his left hand as he runs back towards SR flicking his legs behind him with his right hand on his hat, moving his shoulders forwards
-Vardimon often uses props as an extension of their character and makes the dancers come up with a lot of the movement further questioning them about it - shows he’s an entertainer
What are two movement examples which shows the use of power and text?
-There is a crate whereby the bully and the developer stand on to show power and they hold a microphone
-The bully is in a press up position on the crate struggling to get free from the developer which has his hand on his back as he exclaims ‘I believe we must support the underprivileged’ and he throws him with both hands towards SR and picks up the microphone and steps back on the crate
-Shows his words are untruthful
-The microphone and the crate represent power
-The Bully, in the same scene, is standing on the crate CS with one hand holding the microphone pointing with his other hand
-He says into the microphone ‘I believe in individuality, expressed in precisely the same way … I believe we should all be standing together, alone, as one’
-After this statement, the developer pushes him off the crate as he jumps towards SL still holding the microphone
-Vardimon expresses how society often wants to categorsie poeople and put them in boxes - uses this ajuxtaposing sentence
-Microphone represents power
Which movement examples show Pina Bausch influence?
-Contrast of beauty and harsh reality
-Use of samba dance music
-At the end, there are colourful almost disco/party lights and a red netted barrier - this could foreshadow danger is put across the front of the stage
-All the characters are dancing and celebrating their final moments in the park before it becomes re-developed
-In contrast, in the background the siren and busker have very little clotehs on and are in the fountain and the siren drowns the busker who lies dead in the fountain
-This shows how Vardimon explores ‘the willingness to make a statement with regards to society and its issues’ - discusses issues such as suicide and drugs
What is a movement example which shows a moment of humour in park?
The lighting is purple/pink/white general wash
-The tourist walks to CS with her briefcase and places it down on the floor over-exaggeratingly laughing and throws her right arm loosely across her body following it with her head, then steps back extending the same arm diagonally out and then hunches over slightly lowering her centre of gravity and extends the arm across her body
-This is a moment of humour and perhaps a reflective moment for her time at the park
-It is a light-hearted moment from the more serious themes discussed
What is an example of raw athletic movement?
-The girlfriend exclaims ‘Idiot!’ and walks over to the male DS and picks him up on his side and throws him aggressively back down to the floor
-She then picks him up again by his top and he does a full rotation of the body before hitting the floor again
-Shows the use of physical theatre and perhaps addressing audiences perspectives on societal issues
What is an example of gestural movement?
-The bag Lady and the tourist both drop down into a crouch facing one side then they clasp their hands together to stand up circling the leg behind them with their arms above their head hands still clasped together. They then step both their feet backwards to then travel forwards whilst circling both arms backwards with flat palms to fold them in towards their chest into a clasp.
-This shows Vardimons way of communicating with the audience and bag lady shows how she is trying to protect her things and the tourist is trying to join in - be part of the community
What is a moment of unison?
Use of direct correlation with the popping sounds of the music. The 4 women jump up and down and perform with different alternating formations and they begin a sequence of stepping the leg out with crossed fingers in a low parallel, locked elbows to then flick one leg out to collapse to the floor.
-In the background the male dancers are interacting with different props such as the bully who is bouncing the basket ball around the stage such as the wall.
-This shows how the women are manipulated by the male’s movement in the background and making a statement in society and male dominance
-The use of the props such as the basketball is representative if the character - Vardimon uses props as an extension of their character
