What’s evidence?
Evidence: One quotation from the text (keep it short: 1-3 lines long).
-Quote strongly supports the Point and Topic Sentence..
-Quote is properly integrated into a sentence.
-Quote is surrounded by double quotation marks.
-If the quote includes dialogue, the dialogue is surrounded by single quotation marks.
Quote is properly cited at the end of the sentence in MLA format.
Topic sentence?
Topic Sentence: One sentence.
Clearly answers the Topic Question.
Expresses an opinion.
Introduces the supporting Point.
What’s a point?
Point: One sentence.
Develops the Topic Sentence.
Expresses an opinion.
What’s a theme?
A theme is the main idea or message in a story, movie, or artwork. It’s what the work is mostly about, like love, friendship, or courage.
What’s explanation?
Explanation: Three sentences. How does your Evidence prove your Point?
-Sentence #1 explains what the quote reveals.
-Uses specific and analytical language.
Does NOT begin with “this quote shows” or anything along those lines.
-Sentence #2 explains how the quote supports the Point.
-Sentence #3 ties the Point back to the Topic Sentence.
What’s a concluding sentence?
-Concluding sentence: One sentence.
-Brings the discussion to a close.
-Starts with a transition word.
-Restates the topic sentence in an original way.
-Answers the “so what?”. Why should readers care about your opinion? Why does the text/your opinion matter?
What’s the formula?
Topic sentence, point, evidence, explanation, and concluding sentence.
How to quote?
“The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams” (Smith 45).
What’s the main theme for Ruthless?
ambition and greed, betrayal and deception, and justice and retribution.
