Common nouns

Proper nouns
Names groups of people, animals and things e.g a “swarm” of ants, an “army” of soldiers
Collective nouns
Names things we can see, hear or touch e.g grass, pencil, rope, knives
Concrete nouns
Names feelings and qualities we cannot see, hear or touch e.g unhappiness, fear, courage, rage
Abstract nouns
Used to replace nouns, often to stop repetition e.g he, she, they, we
Pronouns
Action or doing words e.g I “eat”, he will “run”, they “sang”
Verb
Describing words e.g a “gorgeous” coat, the “blue” car
Adjective
Describes “how” something is done e.g he “quickly” ran, the door slammed “loudly”
Adverb
Used to link nouns or pronouns with other words e.g in across, on, at, down, near
Preposition
Joining words
Conjunction
“Thrown” into sentences to show emotion/attitude e.g “Hey!” Cool car! Sarah kissed Alex. “Yuk!”
Interjection
Used in order to give information about nouns e.g definite: “the” (used to refer to a particular noun) indefinite: “A, an” (refers to any general noun)
