Hyperbole/Exaggeration
Placing wildly contrasting characters, objects or settings together
Incongruity
Funny story with a punchline
Joke
Intended to ridicule vice (evil) or folly (stupidity)
Satire
Physical humour. Exaggerated or ridiculous behavior
Slapstick
Relys on clever use of words to create humour
Wit
The combining in one expression of two words or phrases (usually opposites) to create a striking effect
Oxymoron
A humorous imitation of a person, event, literature
Parody
A play on the sound of words
Pun
Something said which actually has the opposite meaning e.g sarcasm
Verbal irony
When actions have the opposite effect of what was intended e.g A boy stays up all night studying but falls asleep while taking the test next morning, failing the test.
Situational irony
The audience knows key details which the characters do not
Dramatic irony
The situation itself is humorous, relies less on punch lines.
Situational comedy
Implying something that is not literally in the sentence.
Innuendo
The unconscious use of an inappropriate word with a similar sound
