pathogens Flashcards
(8 cards)
What are the two types of immune responses?
Non specific and specific
What is the role of fever in the immune response?
Fever is a non-specific immune response that increases body temperature, slowing the function and reproduction of pathogens.
What are the two types of specific immune responses?
White blood cells (leukocytes) and B - Lymphocytes
What are phagocytes?
White blood cells that engulf and destroy pathogens.
What do B-lymphocytes do?
B-lymphocytes are white blood cells that produce antibodies (special protein) which immobilize or destroy pathogens
What are memory cells?
Memory cells (lymphocytes) are white blood cells that spread throughout the body, allowing for a faster response upon secondary infection.
What happens when bacteria or viruses invade the body?
The body produces antibodies against the pathogens.
What is the result of antibodies destroying pathogens?
Antibodies provide immunity to future infections.
