Pathology of the Gastrointestinal tract- Esophagus Flashcards
(40 cards)
Esophagitis
reflux problem
What are the typical symptoms of esophagitis?
Heartburn and dyspepsia
What is reflux caused by?
dysfunction of the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) which allows for gastric acid reflux into the esophagus
Eosinophilic esophagitis
Less common than reflux esophagitiis, second most common from chronic esophagitis.
Esophagitis in children
children with this condition commonly complain about food getting stuck in their esophagus.
Candida Esophagitis
most common form of inifectious esophagitis
Symptoms of candida esophagitis
dysphagia and chest pain
What would an endoscopy for a patient with candida show?
erythematous mucosa converted by white plaques that can be scraped away to reveal underlying ulcers.
cytomegalovirus Esophagitis symptoms
dysphagia, nausea, and chest pain
What is the best spot to take a biopsy from on someone with CMV?
From the ulcer where microscopic examination demonstrated typical ulcer debris.
Neuroplasia
cancerous disease
Precancerous lesions: Barrett Esophagus
occurs when the squamous epithelium of the esophagus is replaced by columnar, intestinal type epithelium with goblet cells
Are benign neoplasms of the esophagus rare?
yes
Where do benign tumors occur?
in the submucosal and mesenchymal areas
What are some other infrequent tumors of the esophagus?
squamous papilloma, inflammatory polyps, and granular cell tumors
What are malignant tumors of the esophagus?
squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma
which esophageal carcinoma is the most common?
squamous cell carcinoma
Stomach
J-shaped structure
2 sphincters: 1 to the esophagus, 1 to the intestines
What does the smooth muscle layer of the stomach control?
the passage of food from the stomach to the duodenum
Acute Gastritis, results from?
breakdown in the mucosa’s protective mucousbicarbonate barrier
What does the breakdown in the protective mucousbicarbonate barrier lead to?
mucosal hemorrhage
erosion
ulceration
helicobacter gastritis
common chronic inflammatory disorder of the stomach
What is helicobacter gastritis caused by?
infection of H. pylori and less common, H. heilmannii
Autoimmune gastritis is a form of ____
Atrophic gastritis
