Lord Capulet (9 cards)

1
Q

Does not want Juliet to marry Paris yet as of age 14 but for him to wait to more years

A

For a modern audience, this may be sensible but for an ELIZABETHAN AUDIENCE , his generosity would have been especially highlighted as many girls would have been married at younger than 14.

Q

Romeo and Juliet share a sonnet as their first conversation?

A

By allowing them share a sonnet, Shakespeare PRESENTS a PROTO-FEMINIST approach to love and relationships where both the man and woman are equals in the relationship- SHOW AUDIENCE that women should be treated as equals and not just possessions in a relationship

Q

“green-sickness carrion”

A

One of the insults Lord Capulet hurls at Juliet when she refuses to marry Capulet
HARSH and CRUEL description of his daughter- Contrasts HUGELY with earlier compassion towards Juliet earlier in the play- COULD have been done by Shakespeare to highlight his kindness before even more and so encourage audience to prefer that approach to women and the opinions he was promoting then.
