Pediatric Oncology Flashcards
(10 cards)
What is the most common childhood malignancy?
ALL (Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia)
Wilms Tumor
most common kidney malignancy in peds. Pts often present with a large abdominal mass and sometimes HTN. Use MUAC instead of BMI to assess for malnutrition
Ewing Sarcoma
Second most common bone tumor in peds, can occur in any bone or soft tissue, but most often presents in the lower extremities, pelvis, and chest wall. Abnormal BMI is predictive of poorer treatment response
CAR-T therapy in peds
Chimeric antigen receptor therapy approved to treat relapsed or refractory B-Cell ALL. CAR-T cell infusion can cause cytokine release syndrome
What is the only validated malnutrition screening tool for peds onc?
SCAN (screening tool for childhood cancer). A score of >3 indicates greater risk for malnutrition
PGSGA
Pediatric Subjective Global Nutrition Assessment - not specific to pediatric oncology, but validated for use in hospitalized pediatric pts
Predictive equations for peds ENN
gold standard is IC; EER, WHO for REE, Schofield for critically ill pts
Appetite Stimulants for Peds
Periactin (NIS - dry mouth), marinol (side effect improved nausea), megace ( side effects increased fat mass, mood changes, hyperglycemia, HLD, DVT risk, adrenal suppression)
Why are peds onc pts at an increased risk of malnutrition?
increased metabolic demands per kg of body wt, need to maintain appropriate wt gain and linear growth, side effects and length of treatment during key developmental periods etc
