What is employee relations
Is concerned with how employees work together with there emplyers
What can come from good employee relations
- decrease staff turnover = reduce all associate costs
- absenteeism decreased
- employees will be more motivated and committed to work
- employees more willing to adapts to change at work
What can come from poor employee relations
- workers and mangers not working in harmony
- conflict in workplace can occur
- workers may no co- operate
- industrial action may occur
- a bad reputation for the organisation might follow
What is a legal company policy and proses
Individual organisation most put in place policy’s and process to help with employee relations

What is part of contract for an employee
- job description
- job title
- start date
- hours to be worked
- holidays
- Pay/ salary
- methods and time of payment
- sickness pay/ allowance

What us a grevence
When an employee has a complain to make with there emplyer regarding a work based issue, prossidures may involve HR or a trade union (goes up the hierarchy)
How can grievencys effect a bussness
To solve greivences its best to stop them early, to avoid escalations. Managers should be trained and encouraged employees to be open and honest to maintained good employees relations
What is disapline
Organisation should have a company policy regaurding employees conduct and set procedures in place to deal with employees who fail to follow them
What can impact a bussness using disaplin
Poor disapline impact on all parts of the bussness employers need to be consistent with all staff
What is dismissal
When an emplyer eliminates the empyees contract and no longer work for each other
usually a last result- procedures and should not be used before other formal sanctions
How can dismissals impact a bussness
Emplyees must be able to give an account of policy’s broken and steps taken before dismissal
Emplyees have the right not to be unfairly dismissed
These can lead to a poor reputation and even finacial loss if not dealt correctly
What is absenteeism
When emplyees dont go to work
Companies need to have an absence or attendance policy in place to manage staff absence and feel with any issues that are preventing emplyees for attending work
How can absenteeism affect a bussness
High absenteeism can reduce the output of an organisation
High absenteeism is usually a sign of poor employee relations
What is redundancy
When an emplyees or a number of emplyees are paid off because there job is no longer required or no longer exist
How can redundancy impact a bussness
Emplyees who are NOT made redundant may worry about there own jobs and work can suffer
Emplyees may be required to take on additional work/ tasks when others are made redundant
Whats a trade union?
Are organisations that empyees join to enable them to have a collective voice. They pay an annual subscription to have a trade union negotiate of their behalf e.g for better pay
What does ACAS stand for
Advisory conciliation and arbitration service
What is ACAS
A govemerment funded organisation that was created too help employee relations, to solve disputed before they end up in court
What is work council
Are representative form across the organisation witch have access to info and authority to make decisions along side management
What is worker directors
Worker representative employees on the management board, they represent the view of the employee who work for the organisation
Whats a consultive committee?
A short term group set up to consult on a particular issue or decisions, allowing people to express there views before a final decisions is made
What is workforce planning
Is about deciding how many and what types of workers are required
- right cost
- right time
- right place
- right skills
- right people
Why would the workforce change
New staff needed: increasing demand, exspanding, new market ect
Staff may be removed or leave : in response to failing sales, competitors taking up positions, needs different sales ect
What are the steps in workforce planning
- Analysts the potential demand for its good/ service and decisions on the needs and skills required to meat demand
- Analysis the profile of its current workforce to determine the need for new staff and skills required in existing staff
- They will ‘ close the gap’ by ensuring there workforce meets requirements ; recruitment and selecting new staff, training existing staff, retaining existing staff through motivational methods
