People Studies Flashcards
(19 cards)
What years did Roger Sperry research? (1 mark)
1959 - 1968
What years did Walter Freeman research? (1 mark)
1936 - 1945
What did Roger Sperry research? What brain structure did he research? (1-2 mark)
The role of the Corpus Callosum
Who did Roger Sperry conduct his research on? (1 mark)
People who had previously had a ‘split-brain surgery’ to treat severe epilepsy
How did Roger Sperry conduct his research? (2 marks)
Through many tests designed to target the different functions of the left and right hemispheres on patients with and without a split corpus callosum
What did Walter Freeman research? What brain structure did he research? (1-2 marks)
The role of the pre-frontal cortex (additionally, how surgery or physical instead of chemical treatments may affect mental disorders)
How did Walter Freeman conduct his experiment? (1 mark)
He performed a frontal lobotomy on patients with mental disorders or disabilities
Who did Walter Freeman conduct his experiment on? (1 mark)
People with mental disabilities or people in with mental disorders in mental institutions
What could be a hypothesis for Roger Sperry’s experiment? (3 marks)
It is hypothesised that participants with a split corpus callosum will respond differently to a specific series of tests than participants with an intact corpus callosum
What is the Independent Variable, Dependent Variable, and 2 Controlled Variables in Roger Sperry’s experiment? (3 marks)
IV: Whether participants had a split or intact corpus callosum
DV: How they responded to various tests
CV: Same tests, with no prior knowledge of what the test would be
What could be a hypothesis for Walter Freeman’s experiment? (3 marks)
It is hypothesised that a patient with a mental disorder, with having a frontal lobotomy performed on them, will have an improved mental health state compared to a patient with a mental disorder without having had a frontal lobotomy performed
What is the Independent Variable, Dependent Variable, and 2 Controlled Variables in Walter Freeman’s experiment? (3 marks)
IV: The frontal lobotomy
DV: Their mental health
CV: They all had a mental disability, the frontal lobotomy procedure (roughly kept the same)
What did Roger Sperry’s research contribute to the study of psychology? (1 mark)
His research proved that the right and left hemispheres of the brain can operate independently and both have different roles and functions
What did Walter Freeman’s research contribute to the study of psychology? (1 mark)
His research proved that the frontal lobe contains personality, and when you fuck it up with a ‘ice pick’ you can change someone’s personality
What was Roger Sperry’s aim or goal to achieve through his studies? Did he succeed? (2 marks)
He aimed to research the role of the corpus callosum and how it allowed the left and right hemispheres of the brain to communicate. It was also to see how the parts of the brain functioned with the corpus callosum severed. Yes, he succeeded
What was Walter Freeman’s aim or goal to achieve through his studies? Did he succeed? (3 marks)
Through his procedures, he aimed to create an effective, simpler and faster lobotomy procedure called an ‘ice pick’ or a ‘transorbital lobotomy’. Yes, however the results were not consistent and patients had a 14% chance of fatality
What were the results from Walter Freeman’s procedures? (3 marks)
Patients experienced major personality changes, some reported having a healthier mental state while others had the opposite. People may have been left incapable of communicating or processing languages or (expressing) emotions too. Infections were common and damage around the eye sockets was done
What were the results from Roger Sperry’s studies? (3 marks)
His tests showed the different specialised functions each hemisphere of the brain is capable of.
Right: creativity, problem solving, map reading, spatial ability etc
Left: comprehension, language and communication processing, writing and reading etc
