Perceptual Skills Training Flashcards
(11 cards)
What is perceptual-cognitive skill in sport?
The ability to pick up, interpret, and act on visual information quickly and accurately in a sporting environment.
Why don’t standard vision tests measure perceptual-cognitive skill?
Anticipation and pattern recognition.
What is anticipation in sport?
The ability to predict what will happen before it occurs, based on early visual cues.
What is pattern recognition in sport?
Seeing and interpreting familiar patterns of play to make quick decisions.
What is decision making in sport?
Choosing the best action based on interpreting the current situation quickly and accurately.
What are visual search strategies?
Efficient scanning of the environment to pick up the most important cues using fewer but more focused eye movements.
Which researchers found that experts have better visual search strategies?
Williams et al. (2002).
Which researcher showed experts pick up early cues better?
Abernethy (1990s).
How could you test anticipation skill experimentally?
Use video occlusion — show clips cut before action happens and ask participants to predict the outcome.
What would you expect when comparing experts and novices on an anticipation test?
Experts would predict more accurately and respond faster than novices.
Why is perceptual-cognitive skill important in sport?
It allows athletes to react faster, make better decisions, and outperform opponents under pressure.
