Pericardium Anatomy and Pathology Flashcards
1
Q
What are the layers of the pericardium?
A
Visceral
Parietal
Fibrous (continuous with vessels, sternum and diaphragm)
2
Q
What are the symptoms of a large effusion?
A
Haemodynamic instability
Dysphagia
Dysopnea
Hiccups
3
Q
What are the functions of the pericardium?
A
- Protection
- Stability
- Lubrication
- Prevents excessive dilatation
4
Q
Where does pericardium referred pain appear?
A
Shoulder
C3,C4,C5
Phrenic Nerve
5
Q
What does a pericardial effusion look like on an ECG?
A
- Widespread low activity
- Tachycardia
- Electrical alternans (different height QRS complexes)
6
Q
What does a pericarditis look like on an ECG?
A
Widespread ST elevation
7
Q
What is pulsus paradoxus?
A
This is the loss of a pulse which is exaggerated in pericardial effusion:
- Breathing in lowers pressure and RV flow increases. This pushes and lowers volume in LV
- Less blood released (exaggerated in effusion)
- Pulse lost
