Perio Quiz 8 Flashcards
(21 cards)
Water flosser
Generic term for a device that safely delivers a pulsating stream of water or other solution around and between teeth above the gingival margin (supragingivally) and into the gingival sulcus or periodontal pocket (subgingivally)
Oral irrigation
Process of safely delivering a pulsating stream of water or other solution around and between teeth above the gingival margin (supragingivally) and into the gingival sulcus or periodontal pocket (subgingivally)
Hydrokinetic activity
The pulsating fluid creates two zones of fluid movement
Impact zone
The area of initial fluid contact to the portion of the tooth near the gingival margin
Flushing zone
The depth of fluid penetration within a subgingival sulcus or pocket
Standard irrigation tips
Made of plastic material, recommended for generalized full mouth irrigation
Orthodontic irrigation tips
Have a soft tapered brush end that enhances biofilm removal and provides for simultaneous irrigation
Filament-type irrigation tips
Three soft filaments surrounding a standard jet tip
Subgingival irrigation tips
Usually have a soft rubber-tipped end. Used to deliver a medicament in areas such as deep pockets, furcation areas, dental implants or areas difficult to reach with a standard tip
Professional subgingival irrigation
The in-office flushing of pockets performed by the dental hygienist or dentist using one of three systems: A blunt tipped irrigating cannula that is attached to a handheld syringe, ultrasonic unit equipped with a reservoir, a specialized air-driven handpiece that connects to the dental unit airline
Systemic delivery
Refers to administering chemical agents in the form of a tablet or capsule
Topical delivery
Refers to the intraoral placement of a chemical agent or local delivery using controlled release devices into a periodontal pocket where the chemical agent then comes into contact with biofilm forming either on the teeth or in the periodontal pocket
Microbial reservoir
A niche or secure place in the oral cavity that can allow periodontal pathogens to live undisturbed during routine therapy and subsequently repopulate periodontal pockets quickly
Antibiotics
Medications used to help fight infections either because they kill bacteria or because they can inhibit the growth of bacteria
Systemic antibiotics
Refers to those antibiotics that can be taken orally or that can be injected
Antibiotic resistance
Refers to the ability of a bacterium to withstand the effects of an antibiotic by developing mechanisms to protect the bacterium from the killing or inhibiting effects of the antibiotic
Conventional mechanical periodontal therapy
A term that refers to self care, periodontal instrumentation, surgical interventions, and control of local contributing factors
Controlled release delivery device
Usually consists of an antibacterial chemical that is embedded in a carrier material
Therapeutic mouth rinses
Mouth rinses that have some actual benefit (provide some therapeutic action) to the patient in addition to the simple goal of breath freshening and halitosis reduction
Substantivity
The active ingredient in the rinse should display the property of substantivity
Unconventional dentistry
ADA defines this as “encompassing scientifically unproven practices and products that do not conform to generally accepted dental practices or conventional methods of evaluation, diagnosis, prevention and/or treatment of diseases, conditions and/or dysfunctions relating to the oral cavity and its associated structures
