(25 cards)
Clinical periodontal assessment
A fact gathering process designed to provide a comprehensive picture of the patients periodontal health status
Baseline data
Refers to clinical information gathered at the initial appointment that can be used for comparison to clinical information gathered at a subsequent appointment
Comprehensive periodontal assessment
An intensive clinical periodontal evaluation used to gather information about the periodontium
Exudate (suppuration)
Pus that can be expressed from a periodontal pocket
Horizontal tooth mobility
Movement of a tooth in a facial to lingual direction, is assessed using the blunt ends of two dental instrument handles on either side of the tooth

Mucogingival defects
Deviations from the normal anatomic relationship between the gingival margin and mucogingival junction
Clinical attachment level (CAL)
A clinical measurement of the true periodontal support around the tooth as measured with a periodontal probe
Periodontal screening examination
A rapid, inexpensive screening process that may be used to determine if a more comprehensive periodontal assessment is necessary
Periodontal screening and recording
One example of an easy to use screening system that can aid in the detection of periodontal disease
World Health Organization (WHO) probe
Probe used when performing the PSR screening examination
Gingival crevicular fluid
Fluid that flows into the sulcus from the adjacent gingival connective tissue, the flow is slight in health and increases in the presence of inflammatory disease
Periodontal maintenance therapy
Refers to the continuing patient care provided by members of the dental team to help a patient maintain periodontal health following the successful completion of nonsurgical or surgical periodontal therapy
Baseline data
Refers to clinical data gathered at the initial visit that is subsequently used for comparison at future maintenance visits
Periodontal disease recurrence
Refers to the return of the disease in a patient that has been previously, successfully treated for periodontitis
Recurrence of periodontitis
Refers to return of the disease in a patient that has been previously, successfully treated for periodontitis
Refractory periodontitis
Refers to periodontitis that is resistant to treatment from the outset of therapy even with what appears to be appropriate periodontal therapy
