Periodic Trends Flashcards
(9 cards)
Metals and
Non-metals
Valence electrons
electrons on the outermost orbital (group 1a = 1e, group 2a = 2e
Valence electron placement
S, P, D, and F
Atomic Radius
size/ measure of how big an atom is across or up and down a periodic table
Ionization Energy
energy needed to remove an electron
Electronegativity
the tendency of an atom to attract a shared pair of electrons
Atomic Radius Trend
as you go across a period the size decreases, and as you go down a group size increases
Ionization Energy Trend
as you go across a period it becomes harder to take away an electron (energy increases), and as you go down a group it becomes easier to take away an electron (energy decreases)
Electronegativity Trend
as you go across a period electronegativity energy increases, and as you go down a group electronegativity enegy decreases
