Peripheral Devices Flashcards
What are the three types of peripheral devices?
-input
-output
-storage
Which connector is used by most peripheral devices?
USB
most commonly used to connect computers to peripheral devices such as keyboards, computer mice, printers, audio devices and digital cameras/camcorders?
USB
Which peripheral devices require little to no configuration?
keyboard and mice (You plug those in and they work thats why they require little to no configuration)
Which peripheral devices require special software or drives to function?
Cameras, motion sensors, biometric devices, etc.
What is the difference between an input device and an output device?
-input device is connected to a computer that sends out data into the computer
-output device is connected to a computer that receives incoming data.
A device that captures an analog signal and turns it into digital data. Examples include graphics tables, document scanners, and 3D scanners.
Digitizer
A device that sends data to a computer.
Input device
A device that can input data to a computer and accept output data from a computer. Examples include CD-ROMs, DVD-ROMS, USB flash drives, hard disk drives, network adapters, and Bluetooth adapters.
Input/output (I/O) device
A switch that allows multiple computers to use a single keyboard, mouse, and monitor.
Keyboard video mouse switch (KVM)
A unit of measurement that indicates an amount of light.
Lumen
A set of communication protocols that allow devices to communicate when they are within 1.6 inches of one another. These devices are commonly used in retail stores and restaurants with Tap Pay phone apps.
Near-field communication (NFC)
How can you verify that a device is compatible with a particular computer?
Research the device or read the manual so you can verify your computer’s specifications suit the device or if it is compatible or not.
A device used to send or display data from a computer
Output device
external component that either sends information to a computer or retrieves information from a computer
peripheral device
-connects through a USB port.
-has special function keys that simplify playing music or browsing the internet.
-includes a built-in USB port that can be used to connect other peripheral devices.
keyboard
-can be either wired or wireless.
-uses a USB port to connect to the computer.
-uses an internal battery for power and uses RF signals (Bluetooth) to connect to a receiver that is either connected to a USB port or integrated with the computer.
mouse
-captures some type of analog signal and converts it into digital data
Digitizer
common types of digitizer devices
-Graphics tables
-Document Scanners
-3D Scanners
-captures analog stylus strokes written on a pad and convert them to digital data. These are mostly used by graphic artists to capture hand-drawn images.
Graphics tables
-designed to convert paper documents into digital documents, such as PDFs or Rich Text Format files.
Document Scanners
-creates editable word processor documents.
optical character recognition (OCR)
There are two types of document scanners.
-Automatic Document Feeder (ADF)
-Flatbed scanners
scanners automatically scan a stack of papers.
