What was Charles I main source of income during his personal rule ?
Ship money, In 1635 ship money was extended as a national tax and continued until 1640. Ship money alone gave Charles £200,000 anually, making it less likely he will have to recall parliament.
What was the John Hampden case 1637 ?
October 1637, Hampden challenged the legality of ship money and refused to pay the tax. Trial vote was 7-5 in favour off the kings right to impose the Ship money tax. However narrow victory shows public opinion was changing and trust in the king and his actions were fading

Charles lost as he had insufficient funds to pay for his military campaigns. There was also a tax paying Strike as the people of England refused to fund a war against fellow protestants in Scotland

Charles was forced to sign the Treaty of Ripon, England pay £850 per day to keep Scots at Newcastle. Treaty of Ripon summoned the ‘Long parliament’ in 1640

A set of demands presented by the English parliament to King Charles in June 1642. E.g Militia should be placed under parliament control, there should be sweeping reform of the Church, parliament should supervise the upbringing and marriage of Charles’ children etc
