What is petrissage?

A
  • Manipulation of muscles by lifting, rolling and squeezing soft tissues
  • Muscle fibre separation by disrupting fibrous and fascicular adhesions

Physiological effects

A
  • Aids interchange of tissue fluid
  • Aids removal of chemical irritants
  • Reduces superficial adhesions and restrictions in the fascia
  • Passively stretches muscle fibres
  • Reflexively relax muscles
  • Change muscle tone

  • Tissue warming
  • Reduces muscle spasm
  • Minimise atrophy (decreasing of tissue)
